What?
With 15.000 runners expected to join the race, the Nykredit Copenhagen Marathon is the major running event in the capital of Denmark for 2011.
Where?
In the city centre of Copenhagen, with the chance to see many historic sights and landmarks, including the Rosengorg slot and the Kastellet fortification. The start and finish area are on Islands Brygge by Langebro.
When?
The marathon starts at 9.30am at Islands Brygge on Sunday 22 May 2011.
Why?
Copenhagen is definitely not on the mountains so it is no big surprise that the race is really flat with a total difference in height throughout the entire course of only 10m. May is a great time for a short break in the city: enjoy a morning brunch or (after the race) a Carlsberg beer, ride one of the many free public city-bikes or relax in a cosy outdoor cafe.
How (much)?
The entry fee is not a bargain at 78-85€ and the city is not one of the cheapest destination in Europe. Copenhagen airport is the hub for SAS but it is used by a number of low-cost carriers as well, including EasyJet, Air Berlin and Transavia. For more cheap options and a few hours in Sweden, check as well flights to Malmö airport. For runners on a low budget there are two camping grounds and a few hostels, including the HI ones from Danhostel (www.danhostel.dk). CABINN hotels (www.cabinn.com) have double rooms for less than €100.
