One of the best Italian runners and a 37-year-old taxi driver, Giorgio Calcaterra has run over 170 marathons (PB 02:13:15) in Italy and abroad. He won the IAU 100km World Championship in 2008 at the Ultramaratona degli Etruschi. In 2000 he run 20 marathons, 16 of them under 2 hours and 20 minutes, a world record. He is the subject of a new documentary film, Top Runner.
What has been your favourite race so far?
One of the races I like more is the 100Km del Passatore. It has a unique feeling. I particularly remember the first time I run it: I did not think to complete it and I actually won it! (Giorgio forgets to add that he has actually won the race every year ever since, with a stunning record time of 06:37:43)
What race would you like to run?
London and Chicago are two marathons that I have never run and that I would like to try in the future.
City road or remote trail?
Trail running is amazing but my great passion is running on the tarmac. I can feel better the push of the feet off of the ground and it's where I started running.
Crowded 30K runners' major events or quiet local ones?
Large races with 30K runners offer greater emotions, but the "small" local ones are more friendly. At the end they are the ones I like more.
One more reason to go running?
Because running is life.
